Compare Dubbed Voiceover Timing to the Original Track

Timing is a separate QA pass from translation quality

A dubbing or voiceover review usually focuses on whether the translation is accurate and whether the performance sounds natural. Those matter, but they’re a different question from whether the timing holds up — whether each line starts and ends close enough to where the original did that it still feels attached to the same moments, even without checking lip-sync against picture. A track can be perfectly translated and perfectly performed and still feel off if every line runs a beat behind where the audience expects it, and that’s a pacing problem you can catch from the audio alone, before you’re even reviewing against video.

Comparing timing without comparing content

The original and the dub are in different languages, so a direct audio similarity comparison between them isn’t measuring what you want — different words produce a different spectrogram regardless of timing. What you’re actually checking is the rhythm: where speech starts, where it pauses, and how long each segment runs, independent of what’s being said.

Upload both tracks to DiffALL’s audio comparison and look at the per-second chart’s overall shape rather than the absolute similarity number. Speech and silence alternate in both tracks even though the words differ, and that on/off pattern is what timing alignment is actually about.

Silences that line up closely between the two tracks are the core signal — a pause in the original where a speaker isn’t talking should correspond to a pause in the dub at roughly the same point. If the dub’s silences are consistently shifted later relative to the original’s, every line is starting late, which usually means the dub script is running longer than the timing budget allows and needs tightening rather than a translation fix.

A silence present in one track with continuous speech in the other at that point marks a specific line that’s drifted — it’s either starting significantly earlier or later than its counterpart, or running long enough to eat into where the next line’s pause should be. That’s the timestamp worth checking directly against the original.

Silences that line up at the start but drift apart later in the file indicate accumulating drift — each line is individually a little off, and the errors compound over the runtime rather than resetting. This is common in dubs recorded line-by-line without a hard sync point, and it’s worth flagging as a systemic pacing issue rather than fixing the individual lines it shows up in.

Start-time offset

If the dub track has a different lead-in than the original (a few seconds of intro before dialogue starts, for instance), align both tracks to start at the same point in the actual content before comparing — otherwise you’re measuring a constant offset for the entire file instead of the actual per-line drift you’re trying to find.
