H.264 vs H.265 — How to Compare the Quality for Yourself
The claim, and why you should test it on your own footage
The headline on H.265 (HEVC) is simple: roughly the same visual quality as H.264 (AVC) at about half the bitrate — or better quality at the same bitrate. As a rule of thumb it holds, but “roughly” does a lot of work. How much you actually gain depends on your content (grain, motion, gradients), your encoder and preset, and how low you push the bitrate. The only way to know what H.265 buys you is to measure it against your own source.
Set up a fair comparison
To compare the two codecs honestly, hold everything else constant:
- Start from one high-quality source (your master or a lightly compressed original).
- Produce an H.264 encode and an H.265 encode. Compare like with like — either match the bitrate (to see the quality difference) or match the perceived quality target (to see the bitrate difference).
- Compare each encode against the source, not against each other — the source is the reference both are trying to reproduce.
That last point matters: comparing the two encodes directly tells you how they differ, but not which is closer to the truth. Scoring each against the source does.
Measure it, don’t eyeball it
