How to Compare Two Video Exports from Different Editing Software

The migration problem

You move a project between editors, or you update to a new version, or you rebuild an export preset someone else set up years ago. The new export plays fine and looks right.

But “looks right” on one viewing is a low bar. Colour management, scaling filters, gamma handling and default sharpening all differ between applications, and any of them can shift the picture in ways that only become obvious when the new export sits next to the old one — usually after it has shipped.

The check takes two minutes and it is worth building into any migration.

What actually differs between editors

Colour management. The biggest and most common source of difference. Two applications can interpret the same source footage’s colour tags differently, producing a global brightness or saturation shift across the whole file. This is the classic “why does my export look washed out” problem.

Scaling algorithm. If your timeline resolution differs from your source, something has to resize. Different editors use different filters, and the difference shows up as sharpness — visible on fine detail and text, invisible on soft footage.

Default sharpening or filtering. Some export pipelines apply processing you did not ask for.

Encoder settings behind the same preset name. “H.264 High Quality” means different bitrates and different rate-control in different applications. This affects compression artefacts, not the picture you rendered.

The first two change your image. The last one changes how well the image survives compression. Both matter, and they look different in the analysis.

Running the check

Export the same section from both applications — same in and out points, same resolution, same frame rate — and upload both to DiffALL’s video comparison.

Match the export length. Even a few frames of difference at the start shifts everything and produces a comparison dominated by the offset rather than the picture.

Reading what you get

A uniform, low-level difference across the entire frame for the whole clip. This is a global colour or gamma shift. The picture is the same; the levels are not. Check colour management settings in both applications and how each interprets your source footage’s colour tags.

Difference that follows edges and fine detail, but leaves flat areas clean. Scaling or sharpening. One export is sharper than the other. Whether that is better depends on your delivery, but it should be a choice rather than a surprise.

Difference concentrated in high-motion sections, block-shaped. Encoder behaviour, not picture. The two exports rendered the same frames and compressed them differently. Raise the bitrate on the weaker one and re-check.

A sharp difference at one specific moment. Something in the timeline did not translate — a missing transition, an effect that did not carry over, a title rendering differently. This is the case worth stopping for, and the per-second chart points you straight at the timestamp.

The per-second chart is where migrations get caught

A global difference produces a flat, slightly-lowered line. That is usually benign and fixable with a settings change.

Spikes are what you are hunting. A single second that drops well below the rest means one shot, one effect or one graphic behaved differently. On a long timeline this is essentially impossible to find by watching both versions; the chart hands you the timestamp.

Check the flagged moments and the worst-matching frame, and you have covered the failure mode that actually causes re-deliveries.

Establishing a baseline before you migrate

The most useful version of this check happens before you need it. While you still have the old software working:

  1. Export a short, representative section — mixed motion, some graphics, a gradient, some fine detail.
  2. Keep that file.
  3. After migrating, export the same section from the new setup and compare.

Twenty seconds of well-chosen footage is enough, and it turns “I think it looks the same” into something you can point at.

When you cannot match the timeline exactly

If the two exports genuinely cannot be made frame-identical — different frame rates, a rebuilt edit — a whole-file comparison will be dominated by the misalignment. Export a single still frame from the same moment in each and use image comparison instead. You lose the per-second view, but the colour and scaling questions are answered just as well on one frame.
